We are thinking of visiting Thailand in January and have read that it is possible to travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui by train. Can you tell us anything about the journey, state of trains, cost, and length of journey? Our expert responds: While there isn't a direct train service to the island, trains do run from Bangkok to Surat Thani, a port on the Thai mainland just to the southwest of Koh Samui. The journey takes approximately 10 hours, and the most popular option is to book a two-birth compartment on the overnight sleeper. The trains are comfortable, and the first class births have a small sink, with bedding, soap and towels provided, and plenty of room for your luggage.
