Buy tickets - To book these journeys choose any of the following : Either a UK rail agency such as Deutsche Bahn's UK office on 0870 2 43 53 63, www.europeanrail.com on 020 7387 0444, www.trainseurope.co.uk on 0871 700 7722 or Ffestiniog Travel on 01766 512400. Booking fees may be payable.
The return journey can also be booked in advance from the UK, EXCEPT for the train from Sofia to Budapest. This is because the European computer reservations system covers all of Western Europe and much of Eastern Europe, but not trains originating in Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Russia, etc. Ask your agency if they are willing to fax or e-mail the reservations office in Sofia to make this reservation - some smaller agencies will do this for you, probably for a small additional fee. However, if this is not possible, you will simply need to make a booking for the return leg yourself at the reservations office when you reach Sofia. It's rarely a problem.
You can, of course, still buy a travel ticket for the return Sofia to Budapest section (i.e. a ticket without a reservation) from your UK rail agent. This will give you the flexibility to approach the sleeping-car or couchette car attendant on the day and ask if any berths are free. If one is available, you will simply need to pay the couchette or sleeper supplement to the attendant.
